What Data Does AP Store?
Annotate PRO (AP) stores the minimum amount of data possible to create a valuable experience for users. As a solution used primarily by faculty and administrators, AP avoids storing any student PII (personally identifiable information) except when approved by a faculty user (see below).
11trees is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge and you can read our Privacy Policy here.
All Users
AP’s services are hosted in the Google Cloud using US-based data centers hosted by Siteground. Read more about Siteground’s privacy here.
When users register we store:
- Email address
- Name
- Password or SSO through Microsoft or Google
- Settings like sidebar location, history options and similar.
The password is stored in a separate, secure database using Google’s Firebase solution. 11trees never has access to your password.
We also use MailChimp and SendInBlue for email communications and Stripe for payment processing. These services are provided only the user’s name and email address used to register with AP.
As you use AP we store basic usage data associated with your account to inform analytics and support users. Data includes specific Comments used and their respective Group and Library IDs.
AP also stores the content you create – Libraries, Groups and individual Comments. The content you create is yours.

AP Chrome Extension
Chrome Extensions must go through an extensive review by Google before becoming available, declare their uses of data and make their code easy to review. Google handles abuse complaints and removes Extensions from its public store for any violation of privacy or data usage.
AP’s Chrome Extension was first published in 2017 and is used by thousands of educators worldwide.
Along with the basic information detailed above, the AP Chrome Extension also stores the URL addresses to document where the service is used. This facilitates troubleshooting and helps 11trees improve the AP service by understanding on which services instructors are using AP.
Canvas & Canvas SpeedGrader
AP does not require (or offer) a technical integration with the Canvas LMS. No data, beyond that described below, is transferred between Canvas and AP.
With the optional History feature ON AP optionally stores course and student information when used with Canvas SpeedGrader. This facilitates AP’s History feature – that helps instructors understand previous feedback provided to students.
There are three levels of History support for Canvas SpeedGrader:
OFF
- AP saves comments selected from a user’s AP libraries along with the date of the comment and the user’s AP ID.
ON: Anonymized
- AP saves ALL comments entered as margin comments, overall assignment feedback or rubric feedback – whether a comment from an AP library is selected or not. This facilitates the rapid creation of libraries of reusable comments.
- AP saves the Canvas course ID, course name, Canvas assignment ID and assignment name only – no student information.
- AP saves the unique comment ID (margin comments), rubric ID and rubric criterion ID (rubric text comments) to facilitate updating of that content to create an accurate history.
- AP saves the data detailed in the OFF section.
ON: Student History
- AP saves student Canvas ID, name and avatar URL along with the Canvas course and assignment info detailed in the ON: Anonymized section.
Institutions that license AP can easily control use of this feature – either turn it off or require its use.
