Canopy Insights

Canopy Insights helps you analyze LMS course data using your Template as instructions. Use Insights to write a student progress report by analyzing multiple assignments, prepare for an exam review or generate a learning outcomes report with multiple student’s evaluations for one assignment, or generate a discussion summary and action guide for yourself. Insights retreives data from your LMS, structures it for maximum value, then applies your Template to generate a result.

Canopy Insights works with Canvas and, in a more limited way, D2L/Brightspace.

Use the Canopy AI option to save steps and return the analysis in Preview window. This option shares the data you’re analyzing with 11trees. See privacy details below. Or choose Approved AI  to quickly copy/paste the results into your institution’s preferred AI solution. Note: institutional users may have these choices predefined for them by their Canopy admin.

How to use Insights with Canvas or D2L

  1. Make sure Canopy is in Form mode by clicking the ‘c’ in the Chrome toolbar and choosing Form instead of Insert or View.
  2. View a supported LMS page like a single student’s submission or the gradebook.
  3. Open a Canopy Template by clicking a Favorite button in the Canopy toolbar, right-clicking to browse your Canopy Templates, or using search in the toolbar or Canopy popup. You’ll see your Template on the left of the resulting page with a preview of its instructions on the right.
  4. Check whether Canopy AI or Approved AI is selected to your liking (institutional users may not be able to choose Canopy AI). Canopy will remember your preference.
  5. Click Actions in the bottom right of the windows and choose an available option:
    1. Analyze the current student’s progress across graded work
    2. Analyze all students’ feedback and grades on the current assignment
    3. Analyze the current discussion
  6. Depending on your choice you may be prompted to pick assignments to include in the analysis. See Figure 2 below for details.
  7. Canopy will read the relevant data from your LMS and pair it with your Template to provide instructions to the AI.
    1. Using Canopy AI: a draft response will appear in the Preview pane.
    2. Using Approved AI: Canopy will provide you with an easy way to Copy the AI package so you can paste it into your preferred AI. Or, if your cursor is now on the web version of Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude, you’ll see the option to insert directly. Click Submit in your preferred AI solution to receive a draft response you can review and use.

Insights Options

  1. Analyze the current student’s progress across graded work
This option lets you choose from up to 40 recent graded activities. The newest five are pre-selected. If quizzes are among them, you can ask for more detailed quiz results. This action does not read the student’s papers, quiz answers, discussion posts, or margin annotations. Canopy does include:
    • course and gradebook context
    • assignment group weights when available
    • titles, descriptions, dates, points, grades, attempts, and late, missing, or excused status
    • feedback from the LMS
    • rubric definitions and how each activity was scored
    • quiz scores and attempts
  2. Analyze all students’ feedback and grades on the current assignment
This option retrieves every students’ score and grade for a single assignment. It includes late and missing status, comments, and rubric results, plus the assignment detail and the rubric.
    • Canvas includes graded submissions only.
    • D2L also includes classmates with no submission when Canopy can identify them.
    • Canopy does not read the papers themselves, so it cannot comment on what students wrote.
  3. Analyze the current discussion
This option includes the topic details, the class roster when accessible, and the full text of returned posts. It also includes who replied to whom, when each post was written, attachment details, and participation counts such as posts with no replies and students with no posts. A discussion rubric is included when the LMS provides one. It looks at the current discussion only. Attachments are listed but not opened.

FAQ

  1. What data does Canopy collect?
    1. Canopy does not retain student submissions or LMS data. Canopy does not use the data to train AI or allow its processor (Google Gemini) to use the data for training. The Approved AI option assures that no LMS or student data ever reaches Canopy. See https://www.11trees.com/privacy-policy/ for more.
  2. How does Insights analyze Canvas quiz data?
    1. Class-wide quiz analysis works with Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Canopy includes the questions, points, answer options, and answer key, each student’s answer, the attempt Canvas counts, score, timing, status, and any manual grading feedback, plus the rubric when there is one.
    2. For New Quizzes, the detailed answers come from a report that Canvas generates, which can take up to five minutes. Keep Canvas open while it runs. If Canvas fails or times out, Canopy offers a partial analysis with the quiz structure, roster, submission status, grades, and feedback. It leaves out individual answers and attempts, so treat it as grade and structure evidence only.
  3. How does Insights analyze Canvas discussions and provide actionable links?
    1. In Canvas, each referenced post gets a link that opens that exact post. In D2L, Brightspace does not provide a link to individual posts, so Canopy links to the discussion page and it may not scroll to the post. Some AI apps strip or block private LMS links, and you must be signed in to your LMS to open them. In group or anonymous discussions, Canopy may not be able to tell who has not posted.
  4. How does Insights use LMS rubrics?
    1. Canopy includes a structured rubric when Canvas or D2L provides one. For Canvas discussions, the topic must be linked to a graded assignment. Your Template’s own text, including any rubric you paste into it, is always sent. If you see “No LMS rubric was available to Canopy,” it means the LMS did not provide one. Add your rubric to the Template to make sure it is used.

Troubleshooting

  1. An action is missing or greyed out. What do I do?
    1. Check that you are on a supported page (see the table above).
  2. Student progress will not start in D2L
    1. Open the assignment evaluation or a page whose address includes the student’s ID, so Canopy can match the student to the roster.
  3. The New Quiz report timed out
    1. Canvas, not Canopy, generates the detailed report. Keep Canvas open and try again. If it still fails, choose the partial analysis and read it as grades and structure only.
  4. Discussion links do not open the post
    1. See the discussion links section above.
  5. Insert into AI is disabled
    1. Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini in the active tab, click into its prompt box, then return to Canopy. Packages over 100,000 characters must be copied instead. Canopy also warns you when a package is very large, since some AI services may reject or shorten it.
  6. The analysis did not mention what students wrote
    1. By design, class assignment analysis and student progress use grades, feedback, and rubric results, not the text of student work. To analyze one paper, use Canopy Assist.
