Pennington Publishing K-12 & College Writing Libraries
As part of 11trees effort to rescue e-Comments being shutdown by Google, the four writing libraries by Pennington Publishing incorporated into the e-Comments extension have been converted into Annotate PRO Libraries and are available to license.
K-12 Libraries
Three K-12-focused Libraries are available to license for $12 each for AP+ subscribers. They are scaffolded according to grade levels – grades 3-6, 6-9, and 9-12. Each Library includes 175-200 comments divided into groups on:
- Writing Format and Standards
- Essay and Report Structure and Content
- Story Structure and Content
- Sentence Formation and Writing Style
- Word Choice
- Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives
- Verbs
- Modifiers, Adverbs, Prepositions, Conjunctions
- Punctuation, Capitalization, Quotation Rules
- Spelling Rules
- End Comments
Comments are detailed and allow you to quickly provide specific examples and strategies to improve. Example:
Revise Conclusion: The conclusion comments on the evidence presented in the body
paragraphs. Use a variety of conclusion comments, such as the GASES Conclusion
Strategies: Generalization (a statement about something that is usually true), Application (how the evidence applies or relates to something else), Statement of Significance (why the evidence is important), Emphasis of Key Point (what is the most important point), or Summary Statement. Use a transition word to begin the conclusion comments.
Application Example: Additionally, learn how to solve problems teamwork skills, which are
becoming increasingly helpful in school and in the workplace. Indeed, video gaming can be
purposeful play.
Pennington College Edition
The 196 comment Pennington College Writing Edition contains groups for:

How’s it Different From AP College Edition?
The AP College Edition (3rd Ed.) includes over 250 comments focused on essential writing fundamentals with a heavy focus on effective communication through strong arguments and avoiding fallacies. Its focus is more on writing as a form of communication than a prescriptivist grammar companion. The Pennington College Edition focuses more on orienting students on following traditional grammar rules.
Another difference is the level of depth provided in the comments. AP College Edition is generally more concise whereas Pennington’s College Edition is more verbose and has examples included in the comments. The AP College Edition relies on references from our free academic writing guide, the 11Guide, to provide additional details for students to reference, making feedback faster for them to digest before figuring out how to address it. For example, notice the difference between how this topic is addressed by both Libraries:
Pennington College Edition:
Needs Concrete Detail: Use specific evidence from credible (believable) experts to support your topic sentences. Choose the types of evidence that will best support your topic sentences with a variety of FE SCALE Evidence Strategies: Fact, Example, Statistic, Comparison, Quote from an Authority, Logic, or Experience. In argumentative essays, be careful not to use unsupported opinions. In informative/explanatory essays, use accurate and relevant (that which directly applies) information. Use an evidence sentence starter, which includes a transition word or phrase and the source to introduce the evidence.
Quote from an Authority Example: Even the author admits that gamers are “… twice as likely as non-gamers to develop some programming ability” (Lee 3).
