Canopy Privacy and Data Storage

Canopy connects to Canvas through either a secure Token or a Canvas Developer Key.

Individual instructors may be able to utilize the Token path to securely connect Canopy to Canvas. Read more here.

Institutions interested in implementing Canopy more broadly can Contact Us to connect via a Developer Key.

In both cases, Canopy stores only:

  • The specific user’s name
  • The specific user’s email
  • A secure Token, which is stored securely using a SHA256 algorithm and cannot be read by humans.
  • The URL of the user’s Canvas instance.

Canopy does NOT store:

  • Discussion posts.
  • Student names, emails, or IDs.
  • Grades.

Canopy simply transforms Canvas data and passes discussion and other data to Canvas. Canopy does not store this information.
