How do I configure my email client to work with Canopy?

Canopy helps instructors identify students who need attention, then simplifies communicating with those students.

One option in Canopy is to email students (along with replying to discussion threads or using the Canvas Inbox messaging tool) the old fashioned way…

Canopy will generate an email for you including:

  • Recipient(s)
  • Subject
  • Message

Canopy uses your device’s default email client. If you’ve ever clicked on a “mailto” link on a website and successfully sent an email to that address then you’re probably all set. Just try sending an email in Canopy! You can always close the resulting draft message.

BUT. If you use Canopy’s email feature and don’t get the results you want you will need to take some steps:

  • MacOS
    • Open the Apple “Mail” app (yes, even if you don’t use it), click the Mail menu choice, then Preferences
    • On the General tab you’ll see an option for “Default email reader”. Choose from the list, then try emailing from Canopy again.
    • NOTE: If you use Gmail through a browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) you’ll need to take one more step:
      • Chrome
        • Visit mail.google.com and make sure you are logged in to your Gmail account.
        • In the address bar, at the far right, you should see an ‘eye’ icon – click it to allow Chrome to open email links. You may be prompted to allow this after chaning the setting in the Apple Mail app.
        • Visit chrome://settings/handlers. You should see  “mail.google.com” listed – make sure it is “Default”. If not, click the 3 dot button at the end of its row and choose “Default”.
        • Try and create an email from Canopy again
      • Safari
        • Read this detailed step-by-step guide. Surprise! Apple haven’t made it crazy easy to use Gmail with Safari. But it’s a quick fix: https://9to5mac.com/2016/02/26/how-to-make-gmail-default-mail-app-safari-chrome-firefox/.
  • Windows
  • Chromebooks/ChromeOS
    • Visit mail.google.com and make sure you are logged in to your Gmail account.
    • In the address bar, at the far right, you should see an ‘eye’ icon – click it to allow Chrome to open email links. You may be prompted to allow this after chaning the setting in the Apple Mail app.
    • Visit chrome://settings/handlers. You should see  “mail.google.com” listed – make sure it is “Default”. If not, click the 3 dot button at the end of its row and choose “Default”.
    • Try and create an email from Canopy again.
