The 11trees team is a passionate group of individuals involved with different non-profits in their personal lives. With Giving Tuesday coming up, some of our team wanted to share their recommendations. Giving Tuesday is a day designed to highlight supporting non-profits and charities in a time of year that is often dominated by wanton consumerism.
Andrew McCann – Founder
11trees supports Mossy Earth, which rewilds and reforests ecosystems around the world, and Partners in Health.
PIH works around the world to provide healthcare to those who need it most. I learned about Dr. Paul Farmer, PIH’s founder, through a beautiful New Yorker article called “The Good Doctor.” It appealed to me on so many levels – educating me about the broader world, creating hope that change was possible, and debunking widely held assumptions about the poor. The story expanded in *Mountains Beyond Mountains,* another great read, and continues even after “Dr. Paul’s” untimely death in 2022. You can watch a documentary about PIH, Bending the Arc, here.
Conor O’Brien – Developer
Being based in Seattle and passionate about animal welfare, I support the Seattle Humane Society, a vital organization in our community that has been serving pets and people since 1897. They operate a comprehensive animal welfare program that includes rescue operations, veterinary services, and adoption programs to help pets find their forever homes. What draws me to their work is their holistic approach – they don’t just provide shelter, but also offer essential veterinary care, behavioral training, and community education programs that help prevent animal homelessness. Their work in providing low-cost veterinary services ensures that families of all income levels can keep their pets healthy and in their homes. Through their various programs and initiatives, they help over 7,000 pets each year find new families and provide countless others with the care they need.
Erling Storvik – Graphic Designer
Besides donations to humanitarian causes, Avaaz, and Norwegian climate organizations, I would like to mention myclimate.org
I try to make up for air travel by supporting MyClimate to compensate for all my flights. Norway — and most people I know, myself included — tops the world statistics on air travel. MyClimate calculates the emissions and offers clean energy infrastructure to offset the same amount of CO2. Recommended by the World Wildlife Fund for genuine compensation, it addresses one of the worst threats to future life in vulnerable regions of the world.
Tyler Wenzel – Product Specialist
Based in Costa Rica, I am an avid birdwatcher and nature photographer. I work on ornithological research projects in my spare time and am the Digital Media Coordinator for the New Jersey based Wild Bird Research Group.
The WBRG is focused on two programs right now. One is their 4th annual Adopt-an-Owl program that supports their research involving Northern Saw-Whet Owls. The other program is a collaboration with FoHVOS who are trying to help hatch 100 American Kestrels through a nest box program. These programs are both vital to the conservation of key species that have wide ranging impacts on the ecosystem, including the well-being of humans through their control of pests. I have adopted my owl and hope you can adopt one too!
